Machining Steel 12L14

Steel 12L14 is a free-cutting steel, which is a nickname for carbon steel materials with an increased amount of alloying elements for the sole purpose of improving their machinability. These elements are usually sulfur and/or lead.

Steel 12L14 contains 0.3% of lead and 0.3% of sulfur. This small addition of elements increases its machinability rating up to 170%

  • For general Turning of Steel 12L14 at stable conditions use a grade with a Hard substrate and CVD coating.
  • In case you are running at a cutting speed that is lower than 490 SFM (150 m/min), it is better to use a grade with a

  • For general Milling use a grade with a Semi Hard substrate and Thin PVD coating.
