Machining Material 15-5PH

15-5PH is a martensitic chromium-nickel stainless steel containing precipitation-hardening elements such as copper, niobium, and tantalum.

Its cracks resistance, corrosion resistance, and strength are better than the regular martensitic chromium-type stainless steel (400 series).

It is used in applications requiring high strength and a modest level of corrosion resistance. For example pump shafts, oil & gas components, and mechanical seals.

The machinability of 15-5PH depends on its hardness. In 'condition A' (the most commonly supplied) it has a machinability rating of 45% (Similar to 420), however, in many cases, it is machined after heat treatment, and the machinability becomes much lower.
