Machining Steel 1330

Steel 1330 is a Carbon Steel material with 0.3% carbon content. Carbon steels range in carbon content between 0.08% to 1%. The machinability is very sensitive to the amount of carbon. Materials with little carbon content (below 0.15%) are too soft and gummy, and materials with a carbon content above 0.5% are harder and thus have lower machinability

Since Steel 1330, has 0.3%, it is relatively easy to machine with a good hardness/mildness balance and a machinability rating of 65%.

You can find here a list of machinability Ratings for different Carbon Steels.

Summery:

  • For general Turning of Steel 1330 at stable conditions use a grade with a Hard substrate and CVD coating.
  • In case you are running at a cutting speed that is lower than 490 SFM (150 m/min), it is better to use a grade with a
  • Hard substrate and PVD coating.
  • For general Milling use a grade with a Semi Hard substrate and PVD coating.
  • For detailed carbide grades recommendations, check the Below Chart, or use the Grades Wizrad.
  • Recommended Cutting speed range for turning at stable conditions is 790 - 1080 [SFM] / 240 - 330 [m/min].
  • Recommended Cutting speed range for milling with stable clamping and short overhang is 490 - 670 [SFM] / 150 - 205 [m/min]
