Machining Steel 1060

Steel 1060 is a High Carbon Steel material with 0.6% carbon content. Carbon steels range in carbon content between 0.08% to 1%. The machinability is very sensitive to the amount of carbon. Materials with very low carbon content (below 0.15%) are too soft and gummy, and materials with a carbon content above 0.5% are harder and thus have lower machinability

Since Steel 1060, has 0.6%, it is relatively more challenging to machine compared with average carbon steel and has a machinability rating of 57%. On the other hand, it is stronger and has better mechanical properties. High carbon steels are less popular since when better mechanical properties are required, the better choice is alloy steels.

  • For general Turning of Steel 1060 at stable conditions use a grade with a Hard substrate and CVD coating.
  • In case you are running at a cutting speed that is lower than 490 SFM (150 m/min), it is better to use a grade with a
  • Hard substrate and PVD coating.
  • For general Milling use a grade with a Semi Hard substrate and Thin PVD coating.

  • Recommended Cutting speed range for turning at stable conditions is 710 - 950 [SFM] / 215 - 290 [m/min].
